Mais qu’est-ce que cet espace négatif ? A quoi sert-il ? Comment composer une page, une photo en s’appuyant sur lui ?
Et puis déformation professionnelle oblige, on jettera un œil sur l’utilisation de l’espace négatif en matière d’architecture de l’habitat…

Hello, Virginie here. As an interior designer, I thought it would be interesting to take a closer look at a recurrent element both our guest-star and our design team use all the time: the concept of WHITE SPACE.
I'm inviting you to follow me as we explore what that white space is, what purpose it serves and the different ways one can use it on a page or picture.
We call "white space" or "negative space", the space of a page or composition of any kind left blank. ( space between the lines, margin, elements on a page...)
Its purposes are: to define and create balance, to drag viewers's attention to the main focus of the composition. It also allows gives the reader a place to rest and can act as a link between different subjects. Furthermore, white space almost always gives the composition a touch of class, "instant elegance" so to speak.
L’espace négatif, c’est le fond de la page alors que l’espace positif est l’espace utilisé par les éléments de la composition (scrap, photo, dessin…).
En d’autres termes, l’espace négatif c’est l’espace laissé vierge sur la composition. Ce « vide » va permettre à la réalisation de respirer, de mettre en valeur l’élément principal et d’apporter une touche « professionnelle » et d’élégance à n’importe quelle composition.
The "white space" is the background of the page and also the space between the various elements of the composition. In other words, "white space" it is the space left blank on the composition. This space allows the creation to "breathe", to emphasize the main element, to bring elegance and a "professional" touch.
Regardez ces deux images, le message est le même, la photo aussi mais l’effet obtenu est complètement différent : la première (très dense et avec peu d’espace négatif) connote plutôt un produit peu cher voir bas de gamme, alors que la seconde (ou le vide est prédominant) renvoie à une notion de luxe…
Look at these two images, the message is the same, the picture is the same but the effect is completely different : the first one (the one which is very dense) gives the idea of a cheaper product, while the second (the one which has a lot of "white space") refers to a more luxurious product...
Si on veut pousser un peu plus la théorie, on peut distinguer deux types d’espace négatif :
- macro espace négatif qui est le vide laissé entre des éléments de la composition,
- micro espace négatif qui représente le blanc à l’intérieur d’un élément : dans un journaling, dans une photo…
En effet, il ne faut pas négliger la mise en page des textes : ils doivent être lisibles, agréables à lire, aérés…
To go further on this topic, we can say that there are two kinds of white spaces :
- the "macro" one which is the space left between the different elements,
- the "micro" one which is the blank in one element like a journaling, a photo...
Indeed, the journaling is very important and to be well understood it has to be clean, clutter free.
Je pense que l’espace négatif doit être réfléchi. Je veux dire qu’il doit rentrer dans notre processus créatif comme un élément à part entière au même titre que la photo, le texte, le titre.
I think we need to give more thoughts about the negative space and that we should include it in our creative process as a real element such as photography, journaling...
On peut avoir peur de laisser trop de vide mais bien souvent le mieux est l’ennemi du bien. On va avoir à cœur non seulement d’agencer les différents éléments entre eux, mais aussi de les organiser par rapport au vide que l’on veut trouver afin d’aboutir à une mise en page harmonieuse, équilibrée et aérée.
One might be afraid to leave too much empty space... but I do believe that "less is more".When the different elements of a composition are not only well put together but also in harmony with their surrounding, that's when get a page that "works".
Cette page, la 2ème d’un ensemble de 3 pages, est une adaptation très libre du sketch de Luckie. J’ai gardé le grand espace négatif laissé autour de la photo et son « clustering » d’embellissements.
Avec un tel « vide », le regard est instinctivement guidé vers la photo . La ligne horizontal vient souligné, appuyé le point focal porté sur la photo.
This page (which is the second one from a set of 3 pages) is a free take on Luckie's sketch. I kept the big white space around the picture and the clustering.
The eye is guided to the photo because of all the white space created around. The horizontal line is emphazing the importance of the photo.
Pour ma part, je compose mes pages souvent de la même façon …
Je commence par choisir l’histoire que je veux raconter, l’anecdote que je veux immortaliser, la photo que je veux scraper.Ensuite, je crayonne, dessine des croquis à la recherche de ma mise en page : je cherche comment organiser les éléments principaux – photo(s), journaling, titre- avec les éléments décoratifs et le vide…
Il faut alors réfléchir sur quoi le regard portera : sur la photo, sur le journaling, sur un autre élément précis...
L’aménagement de l’espace négatif aura alors toute son importance pour guider le regard, mettre en évidence le point focal…
This is how I usually create a page:
I begin by choosing the story I want to tell, the photos I want to use. Then I draw sketches in order to find my layout : I'm looking for the way to organize the main elements (photo, title, journaling...) with the embellishments and with white space...
One has to envision what the main item of the page will be. The composition of the white space is be very important in the sense that it'll guide the eyes directly toward the focal point...
Cette page est la dernière du tryptique "Family". Ici encore, je voulais attirer l'attention sur la photo. La compostion assymétrique amène directement le regard dessus. L'élément décoratif dans le coin droit est comme un point final à cet ensemble de 3 pages.
This page is the last one from the tryptich "Family". This is yet another example of my attempt to capture the attention to the photo. With an asymmetrical composition , the eye is directly guided to the picture. The embellishment in the corner is like the end of the set.

Cette notion d’espace négatif va se retrouver dans tous les domaines du graphisme, dans la photographie, les arts, l’illustration, le scrap mais aussi en matière d’agencement de l’habitat.
Au delà de tous ces aspects abordés, je pense que le « vide » laisse libre court à l’imaginaire, au voyage, à l’onirique : le lecteur va pouvoir grâce à lui voyager au-delà de ce qui lui est présenté, il va pouvoir se faire sa propre interprétation et chacun aura alors une lecture différente… c’est ce qui rend la chose encore plus intéressante! We can find this concept of "white space" in graphic design, photography, art, illustration, scrapbooking but also in interior design and architecture.Beyond all the different meanings of white space, I think the space left free is like an opened door to dreams and imagination : the reader will be able to make his own interpretation and then each and everyone will have a different reading... that, I believe, makes it even more interesting!

En effet, en agencement d’intérieur, il faut savoir laisser de l’espace, laisser respirer la pièce pour ne pas se sentir étouffer sous les meubles ou tout autre objet de décoration…
La difficulté est alors de trouver le bon équilibre pour faire de la pièce à agencer un lieu fonctionnel, agréable, esthétique et répondant aux besoins des clients… (hmmm, je me sens comme au boulot tout d’un coup !!) .
In interior design, it's important to leave empty space, let the room "breathe" in order for the people living in that space not to feel like they're going to suffocate under the furniture or any other decorative object!
The difficulty then, clearly lies in finding the right balance, the best possible arrangement : the room has to be convenient, pleasant, nice and meet the clients' needs... (hmmm, suddenly I'm feeling like if I am at my job!).
